I'm surprised nobody even knows that this game is out ( its an amazing title. RPG 100+ hours, heres a general outline...
Imagine if the world as we know it suddenly came to an end, but an unusual set of circumstances granted you the power to survive. After the rapture's passing, upon opening your eyes, you see standing above you an old woman wearing a veiled mourning dress, accompanied by a young child with cold and distant eyes. Following a short, inaudible discussion -- undoubtedly about you -- the child produces a small bug-like creature from his pocket, and inserts it into your eye. As pain rips through every fiber of your being, and just as your consciousness begins to fade away, the old woman leaves you with only one horrifying thought:
''With this, you will become a demon.''
Awakening some time later, you find your body covered with blue and black tattoo-like symbols, and your veins surging with power. And the world... is a very different place. Tokyo has been ripped from the face of the Earth and turned in upon itself into a construct commonly known as a ''Dysen Sphere.'' Think of it as if an entire city were to exist on the inside surface of a hollowed-out ball. In the very center of this ''Vortex World'' looms a large sun-like core called ''Kagutsuchi,'' which is quickly identified as the embryo of a new Earth. In order for this new Earth to be born, Kagutsuchi must be infused with a philosophy of life, by which all of its residents will unquestioningly live. This is about as difficult a goal to accomplish as it sounds, and is made even more so by the hordes of mythological demons that have suddenly appeared to try to shape this new Earth with their own personal philosophical beliefs. A war between various demonic factions has broken out over ultimate control of Kagutsuchi, and it's up to you which side to take -- if any.
Thus begins Atlus's ''Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne,'' the latest installment in their popular occult RPG series, and perhaps the single most surreal RPG ever devised. If the story isn't a dead enough giveaway, the eerie visuals and conceptually unique locales should offer you proof positive that this is anything but ''just another console RPG.'' Sporting a deceptively simplistic yet original battle system, extraordinarily well-designed labyrinthine dungeons, an almost inconceivable amount of customization, five distinct endings, and 80-100 hours of gameplay at its bare minimum, SMT3 is truly an RPG veteran's dream, and perhaps one of the greatest games to yet grace the PS2 console.
