I sat on my hunches, licking my paws clean from lunch, as my clan played. They were my family; the only ones that I felt were worth protecting. It’s why, when my father died, I took over. I rolled over onto my side as a butterfly passed over me. In this landed, magic’s called my kind the Calm. In turn for the land the high wizard gave the elders, my people were to protect the castle of mages from all evils until we found our queen again. There were few of us, my father told me, five royals from six of the remaining high clans made it to the planet. He wouldn’t tell me everything though.
He’d go on long trips, sometimes not coming home until the next spring. I admit there isn’t much beauty in this land but there was a sense of peace that I knew I couldn’t get anywhere else. My first time out of the lands was on a trip my father decided was necessary. I met Dartmith on one of our travels. He was a skinny, lanky thing with all black fur and a pair of red eyes. He frightened me at first, but we eventually became friends. It’s been two years now, I think, since I’ve last laid eyes on him. In this land all clans lived in harmony yet in separate places. Harmony… With each birth a mind entered my own. It wasn’t so much a means of tracking as it was protecting. Right now my clan was throughout the grasslands Golden Forest.
I sat up quickly. Someone unknown was heading with haste towards the clan. My people one by one began to gather around me as the black figure approached. The figure roared. It’s three baritone voices ringing with urgency. He stopped in front of me. His four tails spread out fan like behind him. It was Dartmith from the Ring clan. Growls of protest could be heard throughout my clan.
“Quiet.” I yelled with my middle voice. The clan stopped. “Dartmith, why in the world are you disturbing my peace?”
His eyes glowed a brighter red and as he talked the gold ring around his neck moved. “Amethyst, there is a dispute among the Calm. The five must meet. We must go to Centrel at once.”
I remember the first time I saw him when my father took me to see one of the five clans, the Black Front. He was just a little black puffball. I hadn’t expected him to get any thinner as he got older, but the next year when we went back he did. Unlike me though, Dartmith had no horns in front of his ears or spikes trailing down his neck, and his fur was pitch black aside from the one golden ring that was around his neck. His eyes were always red, where as mine existed in several colors. I was mostly white except for the few flame like blue stripes that appeared in my fore legs and the black stripe from the tip of my head to my first tail. Another strange thing was I had five tails. I have never seen anyone with as many. Our tails though, represented our powers. Not everyone was born with powers, so sometimes there’d be a kitten with no tails at all.
“Rein,” the eldest woman in our group stepped up. She was all white aside from the five black on her left flank that marked our clan. Dartmith turned and jogged off. I took one last look back at my clan and sighed.
I’ve got a bad feeling. I thought.
Ignore it Amethyst, we’ve got more important things to handle. He leapt into the Golden Forest, animals scattered, shadows followed beside us in wonder, and birds sang. I could help but feel that this would be the last time I’d see my family. Suddenly I was thrown aside. I shook my head. Dust fell about me. Dartmith stood over me growling. You need to watch where you’re going or… Just stay behind me.
He moved. A great big pond of boiling gold was just beside me. I ran after Dartmith. Tears blurred vision. He never acted like this before. Where are we going? Yet just as my thought came across two others joined us and immediately we entered grassland that I had never seen before. Dartmith slowed down. The others came up behind me, both were larger than me. Then one other came out from the other side of the forest. I walked up next to Dartmith.
“Is this them?” I whispered. Dartmith gave a short nod. Everyone faced each other. I was the only girl. Dartmith turned to me suddenly.
“The five of us aren’t connected to one another. That’s why you didn’t know there was trouble. Separate yourself from your clan.”
Dread, along with anger surged through me. “Never,” I whispered brokenly.
“Amethyst now!” He growled. Or they’ll kill both of us. I did as I was told. They all came closer as soon as I cut myself from my clan, and at that moment I began to hate them. I looked them over slowly, as if I were sizing up an enemy. Our heights varied. The tallest one spoke. His green eyes sparkled in the dusk as the silver grass reflected in his eyes. His voice was young to my surprise as Dartmith told me later; he was only a century old.
“I am Evening, from the Moon-star clan.” He said. His five tails moved slightly, each of them a different color. I couldn’t take my eyes away from his massive body. A possessive feeling came over me. Pride of my lands and of my father’s deeds filled me. My thoughts were thrown off as I looked to Evening. I noticed his eyes weren’t just green but sapphire.
“And I’m Rye of the River clan,” said the one who was almost my height. He was gray with one thick black strip down his noise. I had a feeling that he was the oldest. The way he looked at Evening made me think that we were here because of them. He had six tails to my amazement, and his tongue was black with pieces of gold in it. Finally his eyes settled on me. “I’ve known everyone’s fathers from the old days.”
“Litarin of the Valley clan.” this voice was as Evening’s, young. He seemed calm yet when he looked at Evening the ground rumbled with all the fury behind his gaze. When it settled on me a kind of flame different than that of before burned. I growled.
“I’m Dar,” said Dartmith, “of the Black Forest clan.”
I stepped forward and frowned. “I’m Amethyst, of the Golden Forest clan.”
All eyes settled on me.
“To Castrel.” The elder said. It was strange, my first step with the connection to the clan. Something told me I wasn’t going to enjoy this. I stole a glance at Evening. He winked at me. Annoyed I sped up. There wasn’t a period in the day that we all hadn’t been running and night was coming soon. They began to walk now. I couldn’t walk any more. I was so tired, and it was so unusual. I didn’t need sleep. I stumbled to the ground. My back began to hurt and I couldn’t move. Suddenly Evening was all over me. His growls were dark, almost echoing. I shuddered. His back leg stretched before my face. Then he turned and dug his face into the fur on my chest. His body fell next to mine. His breaths came fast and heavy. His mind seemed worried. When he lifted his face slowly, I saw why the called him Evening. His eyes looked like the fiery sky at dusk in this darkness. Then I noticed him staring as intently into my own eyes. He seemed to be just as interested in mine I was had been with his. Rye walked up next to us.
“Perhaps we are in need of recovery,” said the old man. Evening’s head fell to the ground. With one leg resting over my body, he closed his eyes. I huffed in annoyance. He was too heavy to get from under right now with this tiredness. Against my will I closed my eyes. My whole body surrendering to the comfort and protection Evening brought.
Suddenly some thing nudged my side. I growled.
“He likes you.” Dartmith said grinning. I opened one eye and looked disapprovingly at him. “You never let me protect you.”
He sounded almost hurt. Yet when he turned I could barely seem him. I stretched and shook all the dirt from my coat. Evening… I sorely moved forward, running directly into something soft.
“Hey!” I heard Litarin’s stern voice boom. Then he began to laugh. I growled. Suddenly he stopped and turned to me. His eyes glowed silver. “I wish you would’ve told someone you couldn’t see that well at night.”
I turned and was about to say something else when I bumped into someone else.
“Okay, Evening, since you so innocently decided to protect her, then that’s exactly what you’re going to do.” The old one said. Before I could protest everyone was gone. Evening stood behind me with a look of bewilderment.
“I don’t need protecting!” I growled before taking off after the others.
