I just saw a commercial earlier tonight. It was for Swiffer Wet Jet. Yahoo. It was set in a couples house, and the lady was cleaning. Anyway, at the end,and elder couple (presumably their parents) come to the door and the old lady says something like 'Your house is never dirty! You must clean all the time!' to which the younger lady replies, 'Doesn`t everybody?'
I`ve always heard about the sexism in advertisement, but never really felt like I SAW it saw it, know what I mean? I mean, I saw the sex and all, but not the REAL degredation of women, the 'keep the women in the house cleaning' degredation. Cause it`s all subliminal and shit. But this jumped out of me immediately. Does anybody else have any examples of sexist advertisements?

[glow=blue,4,300]Sexism in advertising. Here's one that irritates me. In car advertisments, they always have the mom driving the cutesy minivan with 20 crumbsnatchers (a.k.a. kids) in the back playing happily, fighting with each other, watching tv or all three. And that's the only vehicle you see women driving. On the other hand, guys are always driving the really awesome pickups, SUVs, sports cars and luxury sedans. Apparently, if is put in the place of a man, the car is seen as too feminine. But let me tell you something, it's a lot more cool to see a woman driving a black w/silver stripe (or what I like to call, the Sephiroth edition) Dodge Viper. I always see guys driving them and it's kinda like, *sarcasm* Yay... a Viper... (Okay, so I lied, I'm still trying to burst through the window to touch it). I think it would be awesome for once to see a lady driving an awesomely fast car. [/glow]

Well, if you think about it, most cleaning commercials (for household products, such as Pine-Sol or Pledge) feature a young housewife cleaning up her house...usually with a smile on her face...Which I think is suggesting indirectly that women are supposed to be happy doing housework. Not only because it's easy with the new upgrades of products, but because it's their place to. The reason I drew this conclusion is because I have never seen a Pine-Sol, Mr. Clean, or Pledge commercial with a man doing the work. If there is a man in the commercial, it's usually the "Hey, honey....this house looks so clean!" But you never see the guy cleaning the house.
I remember the Magic Eraser commercial where the woman let her children mark up the walls with their crude crayon drawings of rainbows and random stick figures (or whatever children like to draw these days), just so she could prove to herself that the eraser worked. She didn't have any complaints about doing manual labor, she just smiled and cleaned it up.
Come on...the Brawny commercials don't even feature males except for the face on the package. A woman is usually shown cleaning up messes with the paper towels. Has it universally been decided that it's the women who will do all the housework? I've seen men clean before. Hell, my father cleans more than I do when I'm home. It shouldn't be that way.
But I guess the advertising people stick with what works, and products that border on sexism is another thing they can get money off of. Even if it is sexist, I don't think they'd change any values about their advertising anytime soon.

They should show men cleaning the house while the wife is out... I dunno, shopping or whatever girls like to do ;D, then when she comes back, she`s so happy that she has hot sex with him, right there on the door step. Ha ha ha!
In all realness though, if cleaning was somehow made manly, like, if the vacuum cleaner was silver and had crazy shit on it that looked like weaponry, or if it showed the guys recieving what guys like best, well, that would be a commercial I`d like to see ;D Ha ha ha! Yah, I`ll probably get kicked in the nuts for this. But you can`t deny that this is boardering on a point. Make the toilet brush a spinning drill type mechanism and I`d use it. Or make the dish washing liquid beer flavored. ;D

[glow=blue,4,300]OH! I got one with housecleaning!! There's a Swiffer commercial with a wife taking a shower and then her husbands bursts in to show her the stuff the Swiffer picked up and he's ever so amazed!! There's my example of a man doing housework... even though that one looked more like he discovered the "joys of housecleaning" by mistake...[/glow]

Beer flavored dish washing detergent? I hope you wouldn't drink that. ;D But did you actually see him cleaning the house? He could have just said, "Hey honey, there's all this new equiptment on here that you can use! Knock yourself out!" Until I see men doing 'actual' housework on commercials, I think I'll stick by my statement.

I think I saw a Mr. Clean commercial yesterday. There were these 2 sons I think, and the parents were away so they held a party. Then they heard the parents were getting back early somehow, so they cleaned the house up. Although it showed guys cleaning up, I think the commercial was still geared towards women because that`s who they were cleaning for I suppose... I dunno, they weren`t exactly cleaning up for dad were they? Maybe that`s me being somewhat sexist, but dad isn`t gonna flip out if they house looks like a party was held on TV. *Shrugs*

Yeah that's just it, Kage... TV in general all falls into the same stereotypes.
As for reality...
I dunno about your family, but but my dad would certainly flip out if I messed up his house from a party.

Mine would give me a high five and ask me if I got laid...
... actually I`m lying. My dad doesn`t live with me.
But if I was a dad, I`d give my son a high five and ask him if he got laid. Then drink the washing up liquid.

[glow=blue,4,300]To tell you the truth, I don't think we'll ever see a commercial like that until there is a serious movement because we're taught from day one the role of women and men. I'm not saying everyone is taught the exact same way, but I was raised in a house where I couldn't take the trash to the curb, I couldn't mow the lawn, these were a male's responsibilities. I washed dishes, mopped floors, swept, did laundry. Some men are uncomfortable with doing "a women's work" just because of what they were taught. Why make the rest of society uncomfortable by showing some guy happily mopping? Not to say I don't know any guys that don't mind cleaning. My boyfriend has a tendency to keep his room cleaner than mine. [/glow]
