Karma has been thought about and has been examined and explained in various forms of religion and philosophies since man has had the wit to wonder.
My favorite example is the Mummers of ancient forests of Europe. (Pre-Civilized) they worshiped the elements, water, fire, and wind. They worshiped life around them, trees, plants, and animals. And of course the seasons of the year.
Of the wise priests they had a belief, A season of sorrow on the land will have a season of joy on the land. But it is not for mortals to know in which order they will come.
So 3 years of draught did not mean death had come to all humans, as long as the right rituals were observed in worship. The earth would be blessed again with bounty to sustain them.
Refinements grew through the ages but the premise of balance of nature and life itself is balanced. We cannot see it action most of the time. The village may prosper extremely slowly in harsh climates. However the sickness that wiped out almost all the tribe/villagers in the span of two seasons, was a balancing out. The priests only taught this fact to the new generation trained into the order not the public.
Since I seem to have a rather lot of small frustrations it is reasonable to hold a belief that in some way things will eventually even out. I am not doomed for eternity. (Just cursed for the short term.)
(Note) For those who like Celtic music Catherine McKennit based a hit song called The Mummers Dance, on them. Damn good voice that lass has! I recommend a listen to this song.
