I first saw this movie as a child who understood what was happening but didn`t really understand the implications. Since today, I hadn`t seen it again. But I`m glad I did. I saw it while high - maybe that`s why it was so horrible to concieve.
This movie offers a type of sadism and evil leaps and bounds closer to what I would call pure evil, and its addictively disturbing. To think that there is evil deeper and more sinister than a malicious stabbing, shooting, even beheading. The mental and physical torturing offends and compels me. I`m sure you`re all familiar with the murder cases... by far the most agonizing position to imagine myself into is the skinny sloth guy. Laying chained up for a year, staring at the same ceiling everyday for the rest of your tortured life, starved down to a few pounds and hungry enough to chew off your own tongue (and probably lips) willingly... it`s hell, or at least the closest representation of pure evil. To be the man who watches a man suffer day after day... horrible. To be the man, a prisoner to everything, the chains and room, the memories, the drive to bite off your tongue... the fact that such things are even possible makes me feel uneasy. The depths of evil are far deeper than anything I can imagine that is good.
To have my eyes opened to a rawer form of maliciousness has been a strange ordeal, especially with the weed in my lungs. It terrifies me that, although the story is fictional, such evil is potential. It also worries me that I can`t identify anything that is as good as the crimes in the movie are evil.

I can understand, I believe the situation that you find yourself in. I myself have been stuck in this particular thought pattern for close to 3 years now. The solution is probably cliche' and it didn't actually "solve" anything for me. The reason you don't have any good things to compare against is because good doesn't sell. Every time the T.V. comes on there is some form of sex or violence to get you either interested in what is on or what they are selling.
Another aspect of society you have to take into account if you want to truly view the sick turn our society has taken:
Girls sued for delivering cookies DURANGO, Colorado (AP) -- Two teenage girls who surprised their neighbors with homemade cookies late one night were ordered to pay nearly $900 in medical bills for a woman who says she was so startled that she had to go to the hospital.
Judge Doug Walker declined Thursday to award punitive damages, saying he did not believe the girls acted maliciously.
Taylor Ostergaard, 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitti, 18, baked the chocolate chip and sugar cookies one night last July.
They made packages with a half-dozen cookies each and added large red or pink construction-paper hearts that carried the message, "Have a great night."
The notes were signed with their first initials: "Love, The T and L Club."
Then they set off to make their deliveries.
Wanita Renea Young, 49, said she was at her rural home south of Durango around 10:30 p.m. when she said saw "shadowy figures" outside the house banging repeatedly on her door.
She yelled, "Who's there?" but no one answered, and the figures ran away.
Frightened, she spent the night at her sister's home, then went to the hospital the next morning because she was still shaking and had an upset stomach.
The teenagers' families offered to pay Young's medical bills, but she declined and sued, saying their apologies were not sincere and were not offered in person.
The girls declined comment after the ruling. Taylor's mother said the girl "cried and cried."
"She felt she was being punished for doing something nice," Jill Ostergaard said.
Young said the teenagers showed "very poor judgment"
"The victory wasn't sweet," Young said. "I'm not gloating about it. I just hope the girls learned a lesson."
The teens said they did not answer when the woman called out because they wanted the treats to be a surprise.

Oh the humanity!! Not cookies!!! An act of goodwill was turned into a lawsuit by a wackjob. You can sue and win for anything nowadays. That is why more and more people are becoming afraid to help. I have half a mind to sue that lady and her lawyer for wasting my taxdollars. Then the judge that didn't throw the case out. When that was finished I would sue myself for frivolous lawsuits and use my previous case as precedent.
A rant a little off topic but somewhat relevent none the less. It's the malicious nature of human beings trying to conive what isn't right fully theirs out of another person. Society has progressed to the point however, where this behavior is applauded. It reminds me of the evil gorillas from the movie Congo.

I see your point, but little girls being sued for cookies isn`t even close to the threshold of concievable evil (I say "the threshold" instead of "my threshold" because I`ve taken the standpoint that not all evil deeds are relatively evil. There is a universal evil in my ecclectic beliefs, but it`s unoften that we meet it). It's typically American, but it doesn`t terrify me just thinking about it. It`s hardly an unimaginable evil.
But, although it`s far from the most evil thing you can think of, the woman sueing the girl scouts fits into another system of thought that I taken on (somewhat halfheartedly), which in turn ties in with Se7en.
America is hell. Tell me if there is another place on earth so full of envy, sloth, pride, gluttony, wrath, lust and greed as America is. It`s so hardwired into the way of life most people wouldn`t recognize it. The streets are, from what I`ve seen and heard, the worse. And streetlife is being promoted on TV right now. Envy and pride go hand in hand. They`re easy to identify. Greed and gluttony follow. They`re everywhere. I don`t know much about sloth since I haven`t really thought it over, but I`m sure you can find tons of stuff relating to it. Same with wrath. I don`t think mainstream America is ready to live wrath or really identify with rage yet, but the streets have been ready. Meanwhile Americans watch Jerry Springer and laugh at for an instant pure hatred. That show has always disgusted me and I consider it a slap to the face of humanity. I can`t say much about lust either, but sex is pretty much everywhere, digging into the unconscious mind.
My conspiracy theorist religious nut friend opened my eyes to this. Why I believe he is paranoid (among other things), I have to say, he`s convinced me and I`ve kinda convinced myself. I don`t believe in any kind of realm called hell (although I don`t doubt the possibility), but if there is a place closer to a biblical hell than anything else, America is it. Yeah, it`s no Se7en. But while one may think it isn`t that bad, realistically, it`s only going to get worse from here. My friend preaches the end of days. Me? I just try to stay virtuous. Sinning (that is, living in accordance to the 7 deadly sins) is attractive and alluring, but whether you`re religious or not, it`s simply unwise to forego virtue.

little girls being sued over cookies is the face of the evil. its not the fact that they are being sued that scares me. its the fact that she won. that only forces us to rationalize the possibility that a good is being swayed by evil.

He he he. Good is always being swayed by evil. It`s just easier to see in this extreme America. I think it`s far from being rationalized though. Extremely far.
As for evil... Having your own awareness become your worst enemy... as in anesthesia awareness... truely one of the most horrifying experiences experiencable. Imagine having such a curse maliciously inflicted on you. There are few, if any, concievable senarios a man could concieve more evil and hellish than this.
