Ok,for these tutorials I will be using Adobe Photoshop 7.0,they will of course work on CS and probably 6.5 as well.I recommend 7.0 if you have less than 512mb of ram. Most of this stuff will work fine in Paint Shop Pro,too,as long as you know your way around it and the equivalent functions.I will be demonstrating specifically for PS though, because that's what I use and I know it well. Once you have your software, and generally know your way about the menus, you will need to get the action set we will be using, which is Phong's actions. You can get them here.Once you have them loaded, play with the shorcut actions to familiarise yourself with them, because I will be using them quite a bit in the course of the tutorials. If you are looking for stuff to use those actions on,go to the tutorials on Phong's site and have a go at them. They will help get you ready for Lesson 1,which will be coming soon to this very section. Any questions about getting set up,or to tell me I forgot something, this is the palce.

Cant wait for the color tutorial. Since I'm using my own image, I'm curious as to what I can do.

I can't wait to see, either.I think there will be some nice stuff done after lesson 2,I will make a thread for everyone to post their stuff when I finish it so we can see,and so I know what stuff to revise or expand on later.

Geez...I feel left out since I have no scanner or digital camera... So I guess I'll just be the offical CG Cheerleader until I locate one of them....Man that's a scary thought...but I'll be waiting to see some of the other pieces of work you guys do. And kraken, nice job with the tutorial...it looks so professional! ;D

Thanks,I've never done one before but I've read enough to have a good idea how to set one out,or at least I think I do.As long as it's easy to understand, that was my main goal. Not having a way to import your linework shouldn't stop you.Even if you are eager to CG your own stuff,it's better to get as much practice as you can, especially while I have time to help if it's needed. That was why I put some linework in the thread,so everyone that was interested could start right away. You can of course just take a manga scan and clean it up,if you prefer, but mine was chosen for ease of use. Also,we are talking about traditional CGing in the tutorials, there are many other ways to do digital art with PS.Last night I was bored so I went back to basics, and did a freehand CG.All I used was smudge/fingerpaint,some airbrush to clean edges and the skintone was a light cloud filter with some dodge and burn for depth. The eye and backdrop texture are the only other filters. The more you use it,the more comfortable you will become and the only limit is your imagination. You can see it here.Halloweeny version here.

Alrighty, krak...I'll see if I can find a manga scan to do it with. Perhaps someone can recommend an easy one I can use, since I'm not too into manga... I'm glad you didn't say to try my hand at freehand art on paint or photshop, because with my skills, this is what I would have to work with: Making that masterpiece of awesome creativity tired me out. I'm going to lie down now.

Found a good, free alternative to Photoshop.Dogwaffle is good, but the free version is a cut down Pro,and it isn't GPL.This is Pixia, which was developed by a Japanese manga artist and he has repeatedly refused to charge any money for it.As such,it has a very good fan community,so there are plenty of tutorials out there. You can get it from his site : park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/
