This movie was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen, though that is an extreme matter of opinion. I know a ton of people who loved the movie, and I will admit, there were aspects I liked, like the inclusion of so many fantasy characters and fables like Dorian Gray and Jekyll/Hyde. But overall, it just came off so cheesy in my opinion.
Why? Well, off the top of my head (and it's been a while since I've see it):
I remember sitting through the movie and practically bursting with the urge to rant about how bad the movie was when it was over, but before I could my friend beats me to the punch and starts praising it. It made me doubt humanity for a moment or two. Then I realized...maybe I am missing something that others saw in it that makes them go out and buy the goshdarn dvd of it. So....opinions anyone? Love it? Hate it? Think I'm mad?
Why? Well, off the top of my head (and it's been a while since I've see it):
- The fight scenes were horrendous. They did not look realistic, and because the great and ancient Sean Connery was in it, they had to slow down the scenes so he didn't pull a muscle fake-punching people.
- Logic didn't seem to matter in anything. If you jump out of a speeding car going fast enough to plow through debris, and even walls in some instances, you should not be able to just casually jump out, land on your feet, and keep walking without breaking a stride. In an extrodinary world where physics isn't an issue, maybe.
- As sad as I am to say it, Sean Connery just can't pull off 'dashing' anymore. He's an old man, and sure he doesn't look his age, but he's outlived his nostalgic Bond Days. The movie was almost mocking him when they gave him the power to fist-fight his way through extrodinary creatures that even Uzi's couldn't kill. Why not just give him a walker and stop coddling him?
- Too many stories. They tried so hard to get every little myth into the movie, which is admirable, but sadly unsuccessful. I did like some of the characters, but I felt like there wasn't enough progress on any of them to even constitute as character development.
- Hellboy was better, and I haven't seen Van Hellsing, or other movies that have a similar all-star cast, but I know it's not totally impossible to pull this off. Didn't Sean Connery's fame draw some good sponsers so we could up the cgi and effects just a little bit? Or how about one good writer to make the plot less....terrible?
