To sum this movie up in a word or two is easy. It`s nice. Very nice. And by nice, I don`t mean cute or just OK; I mean everything about it is expertly done. So I suppose I mean nice as in neat and tidy.
The story is nice; not a story that is gonna change my life by any means, but a story that will capture your interest for the time that you`re watching the movie. It`s a love story, and although the many twists in the plot aren`t exactly a mainstay in love stories, the real bones of the plot is. Basicly, it`s a classic tale with it`s own spin.
The audio is nice; neat, completely perfect. I think because the story is about a blind girl one of two things have happened. Either I really hear all the sounds crisp and clear or the sounds were deliberately shoved in my ears. Either way, the sound couldn`t be better. I like the sound of wind and insects in tall grass.
The fight choreography is nice; not completely over the top or with too much although I can imagine some might say there is too little. The fights are exactly where they need to be; if you want more, you`re quite simply watching the wrong movie.
The graphics are nice but they have their flaws and strengths. The look of certain computer generated images, namely flying weapons and things such as falling leaves and snow, is reminiscent of Hero. Hero didn`t have bad graphics, but they`re not completely realistic. However, that`s not too much of a bad thing and if anything could be labeled as the deliberate art style. On the positive side, there are the backdrops. The scenery is gorgeous, period, and lends to the overall atmosphere of the story pefectly.
The acting isn`t just nice; it`s superb IMO. I`d hate to insult the eastern acting talent of old, especially since I haven`t seen many asian films (not as many as I would like to), but the acting seems somehow western, although I wouldn`t say Hollywood. That probably doesn`t make sense to anybody else but me, but if I understand what I`m saying, hopefully you`ll understand what I`m saying too. The emotions and just plain old actions and facial expressions are as honest as you can get.
All rolled up into one, that equals a nicely made movie filled with a sense of eastern mysticism and universal emotion. If you`re a lover, and maybe a bit of a fighter too, check House of Flying Daggers out.
P.S. I have it shared, but you`ll need VLC or some media player other than WMP to watch it.
