I`m reviewing this movie after doing just that; reviewing, that is rewatching the movie Hulk, released in 2002, directed by Mr. Ang Lee. If I remember rightly this movie wasn`t recieved well by many critics. I can see why. Now I haven`t really watched the original 'The Incredible Hulk' series or the cartoon for that matter, but I know most people (indefinately most critics) have. Maybe it is from this idea of how the Hulk is supposed to be where they find problems with the latest Hulk escapade. Or maybe they just didn`t like it. Whatever.
The plot is very lop-sided, with 'uneventful' (his)story development at the beginning and hulking action at the end. But although I got a little tired of watching the beginning, it was essential in order to make the movie stand alone. If I hadn`t seen it, all I would have known is Banner gets hit with Gamma Rays in his lab (On the flip side, I think back in the day, that was all there was to know, which may have purists angry). I enjoyed the way this story panned out, despite and maybe especially because of it`s non-conventional styled plot development. My TV guide thing calls this movie "Brooding and intense"; I can`t think of better words to describe it (they also use the phrase "emotionally withdrawn" to describe Banner). However, it kinda feels as if to make the story come full circle, they`ve introduced Banners father as a villian of sorts, one Banner hasn`t any REAL reason for fighting (there's a reason or two, but the climatic end fight scene doesn`t seem to justify them - rather its a fight just for fightings sake).
Graphics rock. Period. Better than The Day After Tomorrow. 95% of the time, Hulk looks real. And it`s hard to look real when you`re a 15' tall 1000lbs green monster. Physically (and I mean it in the sense refering to physics), Hulk is amazing. He runs. Fast. He jumps. High. He punches. Hard. He picks up a friggin` tank and swings it as if he were an olympic hammerthrow athelete. And it looks sweet as. He fits into and moves in his environment PERFECTLY. He gets dirty, wet, sandy, cold and you can see it and it looks great. If I were rating this movie out of ten, I`d give it 7 points just for the action. Hulk makes me jealous. I wish I could punch through walls, floors and ceilings, run as fast as stinger missiles and just rip apart and destroy things with my bare hands on a daily basis (that is, I have the desire to destroy things all the time). Anyway, I`ve gone from subjective review to adoration and wishful thinking.
They say this movie sucks. I disagree. It's a story, admittedly without the greatest ending. But, as with life, it's the journey not the destination. So go smash with Hulk ;D
