Been playing this one for a while...and I'm enjoying it. I've heard dozens of bad reviews for this (unfortunately, AFTER I began playing), but personally, I have to say that it's not bad at all.
For those not familiar with the Suikoden series, this one is the prequel to the others in the series (I forgot how many years it's supposed to be set earlier than the first one). IV goes into the story of pirates and life on the sea. Of course, like the others in the series, it involves runes and magic, combination attacks, and 108 stars of destiny.
Most people cringe at the fact that despite that there's decent voice acting in this one, the main character remains silent, but has the capability to command an entire fleet. I kinda agree with the fact that Konami should have given the Hero a voice, simply because they allow you to choice his voice for fights (he only grunts when he gets hit, or is preforming an attack, but that's it), and chose his dialogue...but he never speaks a word. Maybe they'll do something about that in the future.
I've also heard people refer to the color scheme in this one being dull and such, which I have to totally disagree with. Out of all the ones I've seen, it has the best graphics. I think people gave this one bad reviews, simply because they were used to the way the others did things, and Konami may have wanted to give a bit of a primitive feel since it was intended to be first in the timeline.
The random encounters is the most annoying thing about it, however. If you're forced to sail to an island a good distance away from your current location, it won't take you even 5 seconds before you get into a fight.
Also, leveling up is hard in this one, that is...past level 50. The only real option you have when you reach 50 is training on your ship...but almost every other monster in random encounters doesn't add much to your overall experience points.
And I finally got all 108 stars of destiny (wasn't nearly as hard as Suikoden III, but...). Actually, I have two games saved on my memory card: one with all of them, and one without all of them (I went back when I discovered that failing to having all of them triggers the bad ending). I am currently on the last fight, and that bastard takes tons of cheap shots.
Anyway...overall, I'd have to give this one a 4 out of 5 stars. If you're a fan of Suikoden, or just like rpgs in general, this one's definitely worth a shot.
