I have had this argument with many people, but I've yet to understand the other side of the argument.
Why do people immediately become turned off when an anime hits television and becomes mainstream? Does it become less...good? Is the appeal it had when it was basically known to no one but avid anime fans go away once 10 yr olds are watching it?
I don't think so. I think back to the days when I watched nothing but DBZ and still remember what initially drew me to the anime. My love for certain anime usually has something to do with the time in my life that I've watched them. When I was younger, DBZ did it for me. As I saw more anime, it faded more to the back of my mind, but not because I love it less; I have just moved on to other things that occupy my time now.
I'm always glad to see anime on television, even CN because I know many people who started on mainstream anime when they were snotty little 10 yr olds and eventually moved up to subbed anime when they were old enough to maintain the attention span needed to read subtitles. So, is mainstream anime so wrong, if it acts as a gateway for other less known anime? I owe my anime experience to mainstream anime.

Well, in my opinion, a lot of people are turned off mainstream anime because of all of the fanboys going around shouting, "Goku rox!!!!!111!!" or "Sesshie is awsume!". And when that happens, people looking for good anime get turned off in watching that, because too many 10 yrs are running around talking about it too much, buying all the merchandise, and shoving the anime in your face.
For me, I don't care if it's mainstream anime. Usually I can find a deeper meaning within it, even if it mostly draws a younger crowd. Fanboys have ruined so much for me, but I don't think they could do that with anime. I'll watch anything, if it catches my interest. Hell, I even tried to watch that anime Shaman King (even though it was in English...which I'm sure devalued it to some extent) on Fox Kids one morning because it looked decent. But chances are, I'm on the bandwagon way before the kiddies turn it to a monstrousity.

Yes, the fan-people annoy me. But, at the same time, I understand their excitement. I never had the chronic spelling and grammar problems fan-people of today seem to have, but I remember being extremely excited when I found someone who liked an anime I liked. The people who *really* annoy me though, are the people who dismiss every other anime besides the one they love and adore. They are assclowns, and need to be destroyed.

Well, I don't necessarily get turned off by mainstream anime. It's more of by the time the anime becomes mainstream, I've already seen most of it or all of it and have moved on to something else. It does get rather irritating though when you have a lot of people screaming about how they love something that's older than what they think. It's fairly interesting though, because when I see some anime that I really really love (like Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop) hit mainstream, the novelty wears off. Everyone is yelling about how much they love a character and it seems like you've heard all of the reasons before... I think it's okay once you kind of pull away from the anime and watch in the background while everyone else is clamoring at the front making themselves look like a bunch of screeching howler monkeys though.

But weren't you ever a ranting, screeching monkey?

I think I was a ranting screeching howler monkey over an anime that no one knew anything about...

Bebop is special in that it atracts many people. It is also one of the -few- animes I can watch more than once and not groan about it. It's that good. However thebestcharactereverisjet <3
*edit* god I need to check spelling/typo errors

Um... Cowboy Bebop is great in the way that you can watch it more than once and not get tired of it. ST knows you can start at any spot in any ep of the series and I can recite the entire series from there on out. I don't get tired of it. And one of the greatest things that I've found about CB is that the characters are so different in so many ways that you can't help loving and growing attached to every single one. Usually in animes, I can immediately pick out my favorite characters and say screw you to everyone else. But in CB, I found that I loved every single character, some more than others, but it's hard to pick one and say, "I like him more than anyone else!" (Okay, so I lied, I think Vicious is the best. SHUTUP ST!) Either way, the other characters are extremely close for second.

I like what I like, whether there are hundreds and thousands of people who like it to doesn't matter to me. Take Naruto, Naruto is a huge thing!! and it will most likely become a huge success when it hits the US. And those of us who knew it from it's beginings can't claim it as our own, though we may be the only people who will ever keep watching it in subtitles 'cause the actors are awesome, but as soon as it hits the US, I think it could possibly be as big as DBZ! The good thing about that? They'd make Naruto t-shirts! I've always wanted a Naruto t-shirt...!

I'm with Auraki on this one. If you can go into a fight with a sword while everyone else is toting a sword, you better be good or else your ass is getting capped big time. I like Jet, but I love Vicious a gazillion times more. I told you, I have a thing for the baddies... I dunno why, but I can't help it.

He he he, I agree with you Gogocactus I don`t like it when Anime is released in the US after I`ve seen it because I`m a selfish bastard who likes to feel special and superior to everybody else. I like being the person ahead of everyone. "You haven`t seen it? Come watch at my house". "Naruto is gonna rock the US". I`m the guy with the knowledge and experience, not just among my peers but among most of the people in the States. I think that may just be me, but I don`t think that` s likely.

[glow=blue,4,300]*sigh* The feeling of superiority is a good feeling, isn't it? LOL, it's kinda funny when people look at me and are like, "You've seen this ALREADY?! How?" And I'm like, "I have my ways."[/glow]
