SaiKano is the beautiful story of two Japanese highschool students, Shuuji and Chise, and their flowering relationship during a (ficticious) time of war. It`s a story of us versus the odds, and is very well told. I`m not going to go into the story too much for those who haven`t seen it, but it`s definately a story you`ll want to hear (or need to hear in some cases, in my opinion). It is a sad story, for those few of you who haven`t heard. People join the war effort and people die. There's collateral damage. It is a love story so those who aren`t into that type of thing should probably stay away, but I`d urge you to watch it, if for any single reason at all, to gain a larger understanding of the world around you, more specifically, how love can/could be. But that`s just me.
I like the style of animation. It`s unique. And pastel-ish. And then there are some 3D special effects that are worked in almost seamlessly. There isn`t much difference between the A team animation and the B team. Infact, I`d say that the whole anime was done by one set of guys. But really, the animation could have been crappy (I imagine a few people think it is) and it wouldn`t matter because the story is in the story, not in the artists interpretation of it.
The sound was really nice. You really feel the seasons as they`re played to you through your speakers. A hot summers day, almost high noon, the insects buzz, chirp and hum with a sort of calm intensity 3 stories below as our main characters laze about on the roof top enjoying the peace, each others company and a homemade lunch. The satisfying squeaky crunch of snow underfoot in the biting wind. It all puts you right there, and isn`t that what masterful story-telling is all about? I liked the Voice acting too. All the voices were cool and sounded like they did a good job. I liked Akemi's voice. She has the only crying sound I`ve ever heard that doesn`t annoy me. What does that have to do with the review? Pretty much nothing. The music is great, very suitable for this anime. I was listening to it while I was going to sleep last night. I remember lots of electronic guitar over acoustic sounds. I remember the electric guitar reminding me of something Spanish. I shouldn`t be so lazy and just go and listen to it again, while I`m actually awake. It`s all kinda soft sounding. The pieces are all nice, and have these little, I suppose, 'twists' of the melody (for lack of a better term). It`s fitting. Shame I don`t know the producers name.
This movie may just leave you in tears. Or with a lump in your throat. Or neither (which I doubt). You see, to me, it seems as if the love is immature. Young love. But I`ve never been old enough to understand how love at an older age works. Presumably it`s the same, but I can`t see an older person identifying with this movie as much as a younger person can. Then again, I suppose that`s the whole experience of watching the movie. Everybody is gonna watch it differently. The younger can watch and feel close to the characters, while the older can watch and feel closer to their memories. I suppose of course. I`m no psychologist.
Overall SaiKano does a great job of conveying love and other emotions to the audience. SaiKano is four star, and the only anime series I`ve bothered to watch twice. A must see for bleeding hearts, lonely hearts, couples, youngerns, elders, new anime fans, anime OGs, philosophers... anybody without ADHD. Watch it now.
